The Australian National Maritime Museum site on the waterfront here at Darling Harbour is not your usual museum. We have exhibition galleries inside the museum as well as historic vessels which you can come aboard such as the HMB Endeavour Replica, navy destroyer HMAS Vampire and submarine HMAS Onslow.

There is a lot to explore, especially if you are a teacher visiting with a busload of school students. To help teachers become familiar with our site and prepare for school excursions we created an Orientation Tour For Visiting Teachers.

To begin we mapped out and photographed the site. Then we thought about the common questions teachers ask us as well as the special information we need to share with students and teachers about visiting us such as safety on board our vessels. Using this information we put together the written content for the tour. Being able to see photos of the excursion destination can also be helpful for students with additional needs.

We decided to share this information using Twitter. There are thousands of teachers on Twitter and we have an account for our education team @ANMMedu to share and connect with teachers and educators online.

Once we had Tweeted the visiting information and photos we then put the Tweets into Storify to create a more permanent and easily shareable resource. Storify is a wonderful free tool that can be used to create stories using content that already exists online – you can insert content from Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Flickr and more.

We are looking forward to creating more Twitter tours in the future.

Take our Orientation Tour for Visiting Teachers and get ready for your next school excursion.
