Enrich your visit to the museum with our new Visitor App. Built for iOS and Android, the App features seven themed self-guided audio tours, six highlight tours as well as great photos, event and exhibition info, maps and amenities.

Use it to plan your visit and uncover the stories behind the museum’s collection: from Indigenous people’s relationship with the sea to the arrival of the First Fleet and European settlement, through to Australia’s modern sporting achievements and the role of the Navy.

You can listen to themed tours, or simply use the app to guide yourself through the collection. Using ibeacons, and the Beaconmaker platform, the app uses Bluetooth and GPS to detect the location of objects so that it can tell you how close they are.

What’s in the App?

Rich detail
Brings our objects and exhibits to life on your phone with information, photos, audio and video stories that go deeper than what the eye can see.

Diverse trails
Allows you to explore themed, duration and special interest trails around the museum – find objects and vessels on the ‘Adventurers’ trail or ‘The Age of Exploration’ – or even Bailey’s curated tour!

Maps
Need to find the bathroom? Need a coffee? Where’s the bus? Where’s the HMB Endeavour? Find it in the app.

Click to collect
Go on an adventure and collect all the objects on your trail. Coming back another day? See what you’ve ticked off before you come, and find the objects you haven’t seen. Plus, when you do find something you really like, you can share it and tell people what you think.

Never get lost again
The app tells you exactly where you are, and how far away objects and vessels are in relation to you.

Buy on the go
Use the App to access the Museum’s online ticketing, allowing you to book and have tickets can be delivered directly to your phone, giving you entry to paid sections of the museum.

Keep up to date
See what’s on – new, temporary exhibitions and special events, which can saved as reminders.

Complete views
Coupled with Google Street view you can experience objects in their context with 360° views.

Also when you are touring around the museum look out for the App icon that indicate that an object is available in the App.

The project has been a large-scale collaboration across many of the museum’s teams with the Digital Outreach team providing the online production, copywriting, audio development and technical expertise. Photography helped with selecting relevant imagery and the Curatorial team directed the selection of tour items. Interpretation and Design assisted with the installation and production of printed promotional material and our IT team have helped in supporting the use of the museum’s Wifi network. Thank you to all who helped with this project.

Enjoy your new tour experiences and keep and eye out for phase two: more tours, languages and options.

We’d love to know your thoughts on the app, just email web@anmm.gov.au or leave feedback via the app.
