Overview

During Encounters 2020 the Australian National Maritime Museum is commemorating 250 years since the Endeavour journeyed along the east coast of Australia. The 1770 scientific voyage set the scene for subsequent waves of migration that have shaped modern Australia. The program incorporates different exhibitions and online material designed to recognise both the achievements of Cook’s 1770 scientific voyage, its lasting impact on Australia’s First Peoples, and the nation as a whole.

Your excursion is to the program Encounters 2020 as it journeys around Australia. It includes the travelling art exhibition Looking Back Looking Forward and the Endeavour voyages.

Key inquiry question
What will I see and learn at Encounters 2020?

Generate questions for your visit.
Sample questions may include: What are you looking forward to? What are you curious about? What more do you want to find out? How will you find out what you need to know?

Encounters 2020, in marking the voyage of Endeavour, will examine both its significance in Australian history and its enduring legacy - from the dual perspectives of from the ship and from the shore.

On the day of your visit students will receive a booklet to encourage meaningful engagement with both the onboard experience on Endeavour and the exhibition Looking Back Looking Forward. The booklet contains learning suggestions across six learning areas and space for students to record their observations and experiences.

LEARNING ACTIVITIES - AFTER YOUR VISIT

Generate questions to guide class inquiries about what we have learnt from Encounters 2020 and what effect Cook’s voyage of Australia had on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Sample questions may include:
- How does the past affect the present which impacts the future?
- How can our understanding of the past bring about positive change for people and places in the future?
- What steps can we take for reconciliation?
