Join us in this 75th year since the end of WWII to consider several different aspects of history and memory about WWII in the Pacific.

How do people remember and interpret difficult events from the past? How do personal accounts capture unique perspectives on significant points in history? How do we investigate collective memory about times of war?
Interviews may include:

  • A Japanese woman recalls 1945 allied air raids on Japan in her childhood
  • Battle of the Coral Sea veterans recall their combat experiences of 1942
  • Collective memories like the Cowra Breakout and Blackened Canteen Ceremony (Pearl Harbor)
  • A Good Samaritan Sister recollects helping to rebuild Nagasaki in 1948
  • A Hawaiian man who witnessed the attack on Pearl Harbor as a child tells his story to high school students.
The museum’s War and Peace in the Pacific 75 program brings together students from Australia, USA & Japan to work together to research WWII in the Pacific from different viewpoints.
