Acknowledgement of Country

The Australian National Maritime Museum acknowledges the Gadigal people of the Eora nation as the Traditional Custodians of the bamal (earth) and badu (waters) on which we work.

We also acknowledge all Traditional Custodians of the land and waters throughout Australia and pay our respects to them and their cultures, and to Elders past and present.

Coinciding with the 250th year since Cook charted the East Coast of Australia, the Encounters 2020 program is designed to recognise both the achievements of that voyage and the lasting effect it has had on Australia’s First Peoples and the nation.

Travelling to 38 different locations around Australia by sea and open-road, the Encounters program will bring to life perspectives from the sea and from the shore.

Travelling Exhibition - Looking Back Looking Forward

This exhibition showcases some of the museum’s collection of contemporary works by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists – responding to the symbolic nature of Cook, and other encounters with strangers that occurred on their shorelines over many years.

From The Ship

At every port, visitors can board Endeavour and experience what life was like for Cook and his crew. Also on board are items that encourage individuals to reflect on the moments of first contact with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
