A good diorama should be full of good stories – action, interaction and reaction. This is how I came to create a diorama with all these elements, built for the Australian National Maritime Museum. It shows 'Canvas Town', a curious settlement that existed briefly in Melbourne as a direct result of gold fever.

Creator, Geoff Barnes

Geoff spent hours researching written accounts, maps and illustrations to create a historically-accurate diorama of 'Canvas Town'.

Activities:
- Do you think dioramas are a useful historical tool? Consider the pros and cons.
- Create your own mural, diorama, artwork or collage of a gold rush town.
- Research one of the goldfields’ towns. What are the similarities and differences to Canvas Town?
